High School Spring Sports : Alves No-Hits and Outhits Burbank, 3-2

Christy Alves tossed a no-hitter and scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Burroughs a 3-2 victory over Burbank in a Foothill League game at Burroughs.

Alves led off the eighth with a single, stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Karin Knoop.

Burbank (3-2 in league play) scored two unearned runs to tie the score, 2-2, in the seventh when an error and two walks were followed by another error.

Burroughs (16-3, 4-1) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first when Jennifer Matheson scored on a base hit by Knoop, who went 2 for 3.

Alves (12-2), a senior right-hander, struck out 11 batters and walked three.

In other softball games:

Oak Park 6, Carpinteria 2--Wendy Wootton tossed a three-hitter and was 2 for 3 with two runs batted in to lead the Eagles (5-7, 3-4) in the Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.

Cleveland 9, Birmingham 8--The Cavaliers scored two runs in the top of the eighth and held Birmingham to one run in the bottom of the inning to win a West Valley League game at Birmingham.

Norma Coss had two hits and two RBIs for Birmingham and Betsey Lund added a solo home run.

Sylmar 18, Monroe 3--Deann Wright pitched a two-hitter and batted in five runs in the North Valley League game at Monroe.

Behind a 14-hit attack, Sylmar scored in every inning. Wright went 3 for 4.

Christy Robbins had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Cherie Warren added a two-run double in the seventh for Sylmar (7-6, 3-2).

Providence 5, Campbell Hall 4--Beth Beales scored on a bases-loaded walk for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in the Dephic League game at Providence.

Taft 19, Canoga Park 1--Taft scored 17 runs in the first two innings in a West Valley League game at Taft.

The Toreadors (9-2, 6-0) were led by catcher Robin Donish, who went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Angie Wood added three hits and Julie Koppekin drove in three runs.

Alemany 8, St. Genevieve 0--The Indians scored six runs in the first two innings on eight hits, two walks and three St. Genevieve errors in the San Fernando Valley League game at St. Genevieve.

Carol Schoenman was 4 for 5 with three RBIs in to lead Alemany’s 15-hit attack.

Newbury Park 9, Camarillo 1--Marilyn Carroll allowed only an infield single as Newbury Park (14-7-1, 7-1) won a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Chris Singer was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Heather Rolland added a double and scored three runs for the Panthers, who retain sole possession of first place.

Thousand Oaks 3, Royal 1--Thousand Oaks scored runs in the fifth on Tricia Gregoire’s sacrifice fly and Sabrina O’Beirne’s squeeze bunt in the Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Thousand Oaks improved to 14-6, 5-2.

Chatsworth 7, Granada Hills 5--Christina Roopenian picked up her 10th win in a North Valley League game at Chatsworth. Stephanie Ellis went 2 for 3 with a home run for the Chancellors (10-1, 6-0).

Simi Lutheran 16, California Christian 4--Sue Reynolds and Donna Schultze each had four hits and Patti Miller added two triples to lead Simi Lutheran’s 23-hit assault in the Heritage League game at California Christian.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Alemany d. St. John Bosco, 15-5, 15-7, 15-12-- Bob Welch led Alemany with seven kills in the Del Rey league match at Alemany.

Crespi d. Notre Dame, 15-8, 15-4, 15-4--Chris McGee collected 12 kills and Ken Lynch had six stuff blocks to lead Crespi to a Del Rey League victory. Crespi (14-1, 8-1) trails first-place Loyola by one game in the league standings.

GOLF

Crespi d. Alemany, 196-201--Jon McGovern was low medalist for Crespi with a 36 over nine holes and Lou Kim had a 38 in the Del Rey League match at Woodland Hills Country Club. Roger Metz led Alemany with a 38.
