Boys’ Athletes of the Week : BASEBALL

Rick Navarro, a senior at Helix, pitched a no-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Grossmont last Tuesday in a battle of undefeated Grossmont League teams.

Navarro struck out 13 and faced only three batters over the limit. He struck out six in the final three innings, including the final four batters. Navarro is 8-0 after he started the season with a career 4-10 record.

Carlsbad junior Scott Karl, a transfer from Palmdale, raised his record to 6-0 with a three-hitter against Escondido April 19.

“I felt good, but it was the second game in a row that I haven’t had my stuff but walked away with a win,” Karl said. “I kept my poise, but I could have made better pitches.”

Lenny McGill, a junior at Orange Glen, went 47-6 in the triple jump to help his team finish second in the event at the Balboa Stadium Relays on Saturday. McGill’s jump is second-best in the county this year.
