Bart Kalbach, the San Diego State football player who has been paralyzed from the shoulders down after a pickup truck accident May 6 on Interstate 8 near Winterhaven, Calif., has been charged by the Imperial County district attorney’s office with driving while intoxicated.

The charges were filed last Friday in El Centro Municipal Court, Deputy Dist. Atty. Maryanne Birkman said Thursday. A blood sample taken shortly after the accident showed Kalbach had a blood-alcohol level of .10.

Kalbach, who had been hospitalized at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, is being transferred to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. His home is in Biggs in Northern California.

TRACK AND FIELD

Kyong Song, with a throw of 185-feet 11-inches, and James Payton (182-08) placed second and third for Point Loma Nazarene College in the hammer throw at the NAIA National Track and Field Championships at Azusa Pacific University.

Mike Maynard of Point Loma Nazarene placed fifth in the 1,500-meter preliminaries in 3:58.93, qualifying for the finals.

After one day, Point Loma Nazarene led the men’s teams with 14 points. Azusa Pacific was second with 13.

In the women’s championships, Connie Navarro was fifth in the heptathlon after four events with 2,777 points. Susanne Johansson placed third in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries with a school-record 14.60, advancing to the next round.

BOATING

The third annual Billy Bones Schooner Race takes place Sunday on Mission Bay, beginning at noon.

The race, which involves only wooden boats, will begin at the Mission Bay Channel entrance and go south to Point Loma before finishing at the Shelter Island Fishing Pier.

HOCKEY

Registration forms are available for summer hockey leagues at the San Diego Ice Arena. Leagues, for both children and adults, will be available for beginner, intermediate and advanced players.
