High School Roundup : 3-A TENNIS TEAM SEMIFINALS

Mt. Carmel 5, Patrick Henry 2--Scott Anderson lost at No. 1 singles to Jerry Miyamoto, 6-2, 6-2, but Mt. Carmel won 5 of the 6 other matches. Anderson sat out Mt. Carmel’s quarterfinal victory against Serra Wednesday with the flu.

“At least he’s back,” said Mt. Carmel coach Tony Goffredo. “I was pleased. It went according to plan--we knew we were going to be in the finals, and we did what we had to do to get there.”

Mt. Carmel will play Torrey Pines for the 3-A championship today at Vista Tennis club.

3-A SOFTBALL SEMIFINALS

Fallbrook 1, Grossmont 0 (14)--Tori Spiekerman of Fallbrook outdueled Brenna Hancock (20-6) at Kit Carson Park in Escondido to send No. 3-seeded Fallbrook into the final. Grossmont was the No. 2 seed.

Fallbrook will meet the winner of the Monte Vista-Madison game, which was being played late Thursday.

2-A SOFTBALL SEMIFINALS

USDHS 2, Christian 0--Tracy Terrell tripled in one run and scored another to back the three-hit pitching of Vicky Vechinskie. University of San Diego High, which beat Christian in the quarterfinals last year, will play Castle Park Saturday at Helix for the championship. Christian finished 18-7. For Christian, which had only three seniors, junior Amy Dawson (17-8) allowed only four hits and struck out 10.

1-A SOFTBALL SEMIFINALS

Mountain Empire 17, Lutheran 4--Angie Fotland was 3 for 4 and had 7 RBIs, and Stacie Peckham struck out 14 for Mountain Empire (19-4). Lutheran finished with a record of 11-6. Mountain Empire will play Bishop’s Saturday for the 1-A championship.

BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP

Lori Lynch and PhonePhay Sayavong won at No. 1 and No. 2 girls’ singles and then teamed to win at No. 1 girls’ doubles as Patrick Henry defeated Hoover, 11-6, for the San Diego Section team badminton championship.

Lynch defeated Ly Chiem, 11-0, 11-4, and Sayavong defeated Khamthy Sang, 11-2, 11-8. Lynch and Sayavong then defeated Kim Lai and Hanh Hoang, 12-15, 5-4, 15-7.

Hoover’s Binh Lam defeated Amphayvanh Khounnoraj at No. 1 boys’ singles, 15-9, 1-3, 15-5, and teamed with Kim Lai to beat Outh Chanthachone and Manichanh Souphalak at No. 1 mixed doubles, 15-3, 15-0.
