San Diego’s Reynolds Again Wins Opening Race in Star Competition

Four years ago, Mark Reynolds of San Diego won the first race in the Star class Olympic yachting trials.

He duplicated that feat Tuesday in moderate winds off Point Loma but knows the trials are tough.

“You always feel great winning a race,” said Reynolds, 32. “But it’s a long series.”

The trials consist of 10 races in 12 days. A sailor can discard his two poorest races, with points awarded based on the finish.

In 1984, Reynolds was unable to stay in front and finished third in the trials, in which only the winner goes to the Olympics.

Reynolds and his crew, Hal Haenel, led all the way in the opening race of the Olympic trials, beating Steve Gould of San Francisco and Greg Sieck of New York by about 55 seconds.

In the first race of the Soling trials, Ed Baird of St. Petersburg, Fla., skippered his boat to victory by about two minutes over Gerald Coleman of of Newport, R.I.
