A Michigan man visiting relatives apparently slipped while walking along a bluff above Corona del Mar State Beach Thursday afternoon and fell 30 feet to the sand, officials said.

The victim, identified as Terence Coburn of Waterford, Mich., was celebrating his 51st birthday Thursday, Newport Beach Police Lt. Tim Riley said.

Coburn was listed in guarded condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana on Thursday evening.

“As best we gathered . . . he was walking on some of the irregular surface above the cliff and slipped,” said Don Jones, Newport Beach Fire Department battalion chief. “He wasn’t actually climbing on the face of the cliff.”

Coburn was in the area with relatives, but none of them were in the immediate vicinity when he fell off Rocky Point bluff and landed in an inlet at the end of the Newport Harbor entrance, Jones said.

A resident with a view of the area apparently saw Coburn fall and called the Fire Department about 2:15 p.m., Jones added.

A helicopter landed on the beach and flew Coburn to the hospital.
