Scott McCorkle scored 28 points, Bill Mazurie and Nick Kost added 14 each and Capistrano Valley High School defeated Edison, 81-55, in a nonleague game Wednesday at Saddleback College.

McCorkle scored 15 of his points in the second quarter, as Capistrano Valley (7-3) used its quickness and aggressive defense to take a 43-15 halftime lead. Edison (4-6) made only 6 of 22 field goal attempts in the first half.

Capistrano Valley Coach Mark Thornton, whose team had turned in a lackluster performance Tuesday in a 74-71 victory over Merrimac of Australia, was happy with his team’s intensity Wednesday.

“Tonight, we hit the boards hard and played very intense defensively,” Thornton said. “Offensively, I was happy that we were able to get contributions from a lot of players. Edison’s a pretty good team, even though they didn’t look like it tonight.”

Edison got its only lead 30 seconds into the game when junior center Bill Martineau scored on an inside jumper. Mazurie, who finished the first quarter with 9 points, scored 6 of them in the game’s first two minutes as the Cougars scored 8 unanswered points to take an 8-2 lead with 4 minutes left in the period.

The Cougars led, 17-6, after the first quarter.

Steve Thobe, who scored 9 points in the first half, finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds for Edison. Art Baird and Martineau had 12 points each, with Martineau also grabbing 8 rebounds.

Chris Kostoff, who scored 7 points, also had 10 assists and accounted for 7 of the Cougars’ 21 steals.
