Roundup : Titan Women Top San Diego St. in Basketball

Kathy Werth hit a 12-foot jumper with a little more than 3 minutes remaining and Cal State Fullerton held on for a 57-56 upset of 14th-ranked San Diego State in a Big West women’s basketball game Saturday night at Fullerton.

Fullerton (13-4 overall, 5-3 in conference play) took a 57-50 lead on Werth’s jumper, but the Aztecs to make it a 1-point game. Trailing 57-56, San Diego inbounded the ball, but with 4 seconds remaining, Julie Evans’ desperation shot from 15 feet was wide and Fullerton regained possession.

Gena Miller scored a game-high 22 points and Werth added 17 for Fullerton. Chana Perry scored 17 for San Diego (16-3, 7-3).

In another Big West women’s game:

Fresno State 73, UC Irvine 60--Shannon Unfred had 16 points, Kathy Lizarraga 15, Natasha Parks 11 and Jenny Lee 10 for Irvine (5-12, 1-7) at home.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Cal Lutheran 88, Christ College Irvine 75--Carl Bronson had 26 points for Christ College (4-17 overall) at home.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Cal State Los Angeles 77, Chapman 68--Tina Slatinski scored 17 points and Diane Williams 16 to lead Cal State L.A. at Chapman. Julie King had 23 points for Chapman.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 76, Southern California College 44--Lori Halliday scored 14 points for SCC (4-14, 0-3) at Fresno.

In men’s nonconference swimming:

UC Irvine 203, Pomona 76--Ken Cooper won the 100-meter breaststroke (1 minute 4.5 seconds), the 200-meter breaststroke (2:23.74) and the 200-meter individual medley (2:10.20) to lead Irvine at home. Jeff Klatt won the 200 freestyle (1:47.9) and the 500 freestyle (4:54.52), and Tom Jordan won both the 1- and 3-meter dives for Irvine (7-2, 4-0).

In women’s nonconference swimming:

UC Irvine 175, Pomona 63--Laura Bigley won the 50 freestyle (25.7) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.3), and Devon Coate won the 400 IM (4:43.25), the 100 freestyle (56.95) and was part of the winning 800 freestyle relay team to lead Irvine (5-4 overall) at home.

In nonconference wrestling:

Jose Flores (190-pound division) and heavyweight David Jones won individual titles to lead Cal State Fullerton to a second-place finish at the California Collegiate Invitational at San Francisco.
