A Placentia man who nearly lost a leg trying to outrun a freight train was in stable condition at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange today, hospital officials said.

Jose Gonzalez de Anda Jr., 48, was struck by a step extending from the westbound Santa Fe train Thursday evening in Placentia as he and a friend dashed across the railroad tracks to avoid waiting for the train to pass, police said. The friend crossed uninjured, but de Anda’s left leg was broken and nearly severed.

De Anda underwent surgery, but officials said it was too soon to know if doctors will have to amputate his leg.
