No Poverty
In the account of the attempted holdup of the Federal Armored Express courier at the Wells Fargo Bank in the Crenshaw District, (Metro, May 31) reporter Bob Baker writes that the Crenshaw District is the dividing line; “to the east lies drab poverty.”
Apparently, Baker is unacquainted with that part of Los Angeles. Drive through those residential neighborhoods and you will see single family homes, some duplexes, and an occasional apartment house--all well-maintained and in good repair. The lawns and gardens are cared for by professional gardeners, late model cars are parked in driveways. Anyone looking for the signs of poverty Baker implies would have to go much farther east, past the Harbor Freeway.
Those of us who live in the community east of Crenshaw are mostly homeowners: retirees, business people, parents with families, blue-collar workers, professional people.
Drab poverty, indeed!
