Hearing to Be Held on Landfill Expansion Plan
Supporters and opponents of a plan to expand the Azusa Land Reclamation Co. landfill will have a chance to testify next week at a hearing sponsored by the state Senate Committee on Agriculture and Water Resources.
The hearing is scheduled for Dec. 1 at 9:30 a.m. in the El Monte City Council chambers at 11333 Valley Blvd. The committee wants to know how the expansion would affect the San Gabriel Valley’s ground-water supply. Regional and state water officials, environmentalists and representatives of Browning-Ferris Industries, parent company of the landfill firm, have been invited to speak.
In a controversial decision, the State Water Resources Control Board narrowly approved the expansion plan in October. Earlier this month, water suppliers and environmentalists sued to block the expansion.
