Ten students of the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program were honored at the third annual Diane Thomas Screenwriting Awards in Westwood. Chris Gallagher of Los Angeles won the $5,000 first prize for his script “Halfway There,” a romantic comedy.

The $3,000 second-prize winner was Penelope Wong of Oakland, who submitted the drama “The Shanghai Cafe.” Los Angeles resident Joe Garza received third prize and $1,000 for his futurist script, “Defender.” Seven others earned $200 certificates for their scripts. The awards, named after the late Diane Thomas, who wrote the 1984 hit, “Romancing the Stone,” were presented by Steven Spielberg and James L. Brooks.
