COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Valley Beats West L.A. to Clinch Title

The Valley College men’s basketball team took care of business Saturday night, clinching the Western State Conference title outright with an 87-69 win over host West L. A.

Valley concluded conference play with a 13-2 mark.

With the score tied at halftime, 38-38, Valley (22-10 overall) took off in the second half behind the play of Shelton Boykin, who finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Andre Harrell, Shawn DeLaittre and Cliff Barnes each scored 16 points for Valley.

Antelope Valley 122, Rio Hondo 72--Records fell in a Foothill Conference season finale at Antelope Valley.

Antelope Valley guard Dedan Thomas handed out nine assists to set a single-season school record. Thomas finished with 210, breaking the old mark of 202. In addition, Antelope Valley (27-6, 13-1) finished the year averaging 95.7 points a game, setting a school mark.

Bakersfield 87, Glendale 74--Bruce Heicke scored a game-high 24 points and teammate Dave Swanson scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds but Glendale (22-11, 10-5) came up short in a Western State Conference game at Bakersfield.

BASEBALL

University of San Diego 9, Cal State Northridge 7--A six-run eighth inning rallied host San Diego to a nonconference win.

Greg Shockey hit a three-run home run in the fifth to give Northridge an early lead.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 73, Pierce 61--Forward Sandrine Rocher scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Monarchs in a Western State Conference finale at Pierce.

Valley stretched a 12-point lead at halftime to 19, before Pierce (10-20, 3-12) pulled to within 10 with eight minutes to play. But the Lady Brahmas could get no closer.

UC Riverside 56, Cal State Northridge 47--Cokey Drake scored a game-high 16 points and Heidi Miley added 14 for host Riverside, which went on an 11-0 run at the start of the second half to extend a five-point halftime lead to 16 in the conference game.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge d. UC Irvine, 15-8, 15-6, 16-14--The Matadors rallied from a 7-1 deficit in the final game to win a WIVA match at UC Irvine’s Crawford Hall.
