The Soviet Union recognizes the results of the Nicaraguan elections as legitimate and is prepared to negotiate with the government of Violeta Barrios de Chamorro about future relations, a Foreign Ministry official said today.

“The Soviet Union has more than once expressed its willingness to respect the results of just and free elections in Nicaragua,” said Ion Bourlaia, the Foreign Ministry’s deputy chief for Latin America. “Today, we are confirming this position.”

Bourlaia told a news conference that the Soviet Union will continue to give non-military aid to Nicaragua if the new government wants it, and is also prepared to negotiate future trade and military cooperation.

The Soviet Union cut off military supplies to Nicaragua after 1988, but still provides over $324 million in goods, Bourlaia said. An additional 25 tons of wheat and rice are given to Nicaragua annually, he said.
