THE SIDELINES : Mariners Sign Griffey, 2 Others

Outfielders Ken Griffey Jr. and Jay Buhner and right-handed pitcher Dave Burba have agreed to one-year contracts with the Seattle Mariners, the team said today.

Contract terms were not announced. However, the Seattle Times reported that Griffey was expected to receive close to $225,000 and Buhner $175,000 base salary plus incentives.

Griffey, 20, hit .261 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 127 games in his rookie season last year. He finished third in the American League’s rookie of the year balloting.

Griffey was paid the $68,000 minimum in 1989.
