Charlie Hayes hit a two-run home run off slumping Neal Heaton and Carmelo Martinez drove in three runs as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12-4, Thursday night in Pittsburgh.

The Pirates fell into a tie for first place with the New York Mets in the National League East.

Len Dykstra scored three runs in the first three innings and Dickie Thon went three for five with two runs batted in as the Phillies won for the first time in four games at Pittsburgh this season.

Terry Mulholland (5-4) was the beneficiary of Philadelphia’s 14-hit attack, giving up 10 hits in his second complete game. He improved his road record to 5-2.

Heaton (10-7), losing his fifth in a row, walked Dykstra and Thon singled ahead of Tommy Herr’s two-run double in the first. Von Hayes hit a sacrifice fly and Martinez singled before Charlie Hayes homered into the left-field seats, his seventh of the season and fourth in 46 at-bats against Pittsburgh in his career.

Heaton, an All-Star pitcher who is winless since June 24, allowed five runs and four hits in two-thirds of an inning. He has given up 19 runs in 20 2/3 innings during his losing streak, raising his earned-run average from 2.89 to 3.92. Heaton hasn’t won at home since May 27.

New York 6-1, St. Louis 1-3--The Mets split a doubleheader with the Cardinals at New York, winning the opener on Ron Darling’s four-hitter, and losing the nightcap as Ken Hill, just back from the minors, allowed one run and three hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Darryl Strawberry drove in two runs for the Mets and Daryl Boston went four for four, all singles, in the opener.

Darling (4-5), inserted back into the rotation last week, gave up an unearned run in the first inning, struck out six and walked two in his longest outing of the year.

In the second game, Hill (1-0) struck out nine and walked three in helping the Cardinals win for the seventh time in nine games. Lee Smith relieved in the eighth and finished for his 15th save.

San Francisco 4, Cincinnati 3--Brett Butler had four hits, scored two runs and drove in another as the Giants won at San Francisco.

The Giants pulled to within 8 1/2 games of the first-place Reds in the NL West by handing Cincinnati its fourth consecutive loss.

The Giants broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh when Butler singled, took third on Rick Leach’s single and scored when Will Clark grounded into a double play.

Mark Thurmond (2-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief for the victory. Jeff Brantley pitched the final two innings for his 16th save.

Montreal 3, Chicago 2--Tim Raines singled home Delino DeShields with the winning run with two out in the 10th inning to give the Expos a victory at Montreal.

Tim Burke (1-1) got the victory as Montreal won its second consecutive 10-inning game. The Cubs scored two runs in the first, one when Dave Clark hit Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd’s first pitch of the game over the right-center field fence for his third homer.

Boyd pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked none.

San Diego 8, Houston 2--Jack Clark hit a three-run homer and Eric Show won as a starter for the first time since June 1989, to give the Padres their fourth consecutive victory in a game at San Diego.

Show (2-8) gave up seven hits and left after Bill Doran’s two-run double with one out in the eighth.
