THE SIDELINES : Senna Posts Top Qualifying Lap

HOCKENHEIM, West Germany —
Ayrton Senna of Brazil, the two-time defending champion, won the provisional pole position for the West German Grand Prix today with a record qualifying lap.
Senna, in a McLaren-Honda, waited until the one-hour practice was nearly half completed. Then, after a warm-up lap, he zipped around the 4.22-mile track in one minute, 40.198 seconds, averaging 151.77 m.p.h.
The previous best in qualifying was Keke Rosberg of Finland, who did a lap in 1:42.013.
