ANACAPA ISLAND : Brick Light Station Is Included on National Register of Historic Places
The Anacapa Island Light Station was included Friday in the National Register of Historic Places.
The brick lighthouse stands 276 feet above the water at the easternmost point of Anacapa Island.
The island, which has a land mass of only about one square mile, is 14 miles south of Ventura.
Because of a number of maritime disasters, an unattended beacon was installed on the island in 1912, followed by construction of the lighthouse.
Members of the U.S. Coast Guard lived on Anacapa and staffed the lighthouse until it was made fully automatic in 1969.
The former Coast Guard buildings now house a National Park complex.
Members of the Coast Guard Station on Channel Islands travel to the lighthouse once a month to check on the still-functioning light, foghorn, radio beacon and generator.
