WAC Moves Toward Possible Expansion

Share

The Western Athletic Conference Presidents’ Council has voted to lift a moratorium on expansion, but officials said Thursday that the move does not necessarily mean expansion of the nine-team conference is forthcoming.

The action was the result of a recommendation by the WAC’s Conference Council after its July meeting.

“Lifting the moratorium on expansion does not mean that expansion is imminent,” said Dr. Diana Natalicio, president of Texas El Paso and chairwoman of the Presidents’ Council. “It means an orderly process regarding the possibility of expansion has been mandated. . . . The goal of the conference is to move in a studied, orderly and careful manner.”

Commissioner Dr. Joe Kearney said the WAC’s expansion committee will gather further information and report its findings to the Presidents’ Council. Kearney said the earliest a potential new member could be added would be for the 1992-93 year, with the 1993-94 year more likely.

San Diego State Athletic Director Fred Miller said he expects further development next spring, and the next step will be to appoint a subcommittee that would talk to prospective new-member schools. It is believed the subcommittee will approach Fresno State, San Jose State and Nevada Las Vegas, as well as others.
