LOCAL : Ex-Cop Shoots Armed Intruders
A retired police officer shot and critically wounded three of four armed men last night after they burst into his home brandishing handguns at him, police said today.
Police identified the intruders as Phouxay Vanhnarath, 19, of Costa Mesa; Sayavong Nanthavongdouangsy, 18, of Anaheim, and two male juveniles--one of Garden Grove and one of Santa Ana. The names of the juveniles were being withheld because of their age.
Vanhnarath and the two juveniles, who were hit by shotgun fire, were in critical condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Anaheim Police Sgt. Chet Barry said.
Nanthavongdouangsy was being held at the Anaheim Temporary Detention Facility on suspicion of attempted residential robbery, Barry said.
Earl Swoap, 53, who retired from the Yakima, Wash., police force 13 years ago, told police he fired at the intruders after they broke into his North Hanover Street home.
