Gulls Goalie Hanlon is Recalled by Red Wings

Goalie Glen Hanlon was recalled by the Detroit Red Wings for two weeks, the International Hockey League Gulls announced Friday.

In return, the Red Wings will loan Alain Chevrier, their No. 2 goalie, to the Gulls for the same period.

According to Don Waddell, Gulls general manager, the switch was to get Chevrier more playing time--he was 0-2 in two games--and give Tim Cheveldae, Detroit’s No. 1 goalie, a break.

Hanlon joined the Gulls from Detroit Oct. 17, and has a 6-4 record and 3.87 goals-against average in 11 games. The Gulls (10-9-2) are 9-6-1 since he arrived. He joined Detroit for Friday’s game against St. Louis.

“Even if it’s only for a few games, it’s great for Glen to go back up,” said Waddell, who added that arrangements of this kind were uncommon. “And we’re getting an NHL goalie in return.”

Chevrier, 29, is in his fifth year in the NHL. He was 17-16-3 last season with Chicago and Pittsburgh, and in 1989 had a 9-7 playoff record (2.61 goals-against average) when the Blackhawks reached the Campbell Conference finals.

The Gulls, an independent first-year franchise, have a working agreement with Detroit.
