SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Scott Patton caught a pair of touchdown passes and threw for another as Capistrano Valley High School defeated Camarillo, 38-14, in a quarterfinal of the Division II playoffs Friday night at Capistrano Valley High School.

Capistrano Valley (10-2) had a tougher time with Camarillo (8-4) than the score would indicate.

After a scoreless first quarter, Capistrano Valley scored on a 50-yard pass play from Tony Solliday to Dave Poltl. Poltl finished the game with four receptions, leaving him three shy of the county career record of 169 set by Kennedy’s Rick Parma.

Camarillo bounced back with a 61-yard, nine-play drive that ended with Tag Johnson’s one-yard touchdown run. Charlie Grigas blocked the extra point attempt, leaving the score at 7-6.

The Cougars, who will play South Coast League rival Mission Viejo in the semifinals Friday, scored on their next possession when Solliday threw 15 yards to Patton. Tomek Mikler’s kick gave Capistrano Valley a 14-6 lead.

Capistrano Valley’s special teams struck again when the Cougars blocked a punt, and Allan Perlas returned it nine yards for a score.

The Cougars pushed their lead to 28-6 when Patton took a pitch from Solliday, set up and threw 73 yards to Brian Peterson.
