COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CSUN Women Fall in Opener

Friday was a day of firsts for the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team. The Matadors played their first game as a Division I team and their first game under Coach Janet Martin.

They also experienced their first loss at the Division I level, falling, 68-35, to Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the four-team Fullerton tournament.

Northridge fell behind, 35-19, at halftime and struggled offensively throughout the evening, shooting 26% from the field.

Northridge’s Julie Arlotto finished five of 13 from the field and scored a team-leading 10 points. No other Northridge starter scored more than four points. Haily Griffith and Jody Bittner came off the bench to support Arlotto with six points each.

Arlotto grabbed eight rebounds, and point guard Joan Weinerth led the team with 10 rebounds. Fullerton led Northridge in total rebounds, 43-42.

Fullerton center Genia Miller notched game-high totals of 24 points and 11 rebounds. Former Golden West star Claudette Jackson had 11 points for Fullerton.

In other women’s games:

Moorpark 90, Cypress 35--Former El Camino Real High standouts Lisa Huffaker and Kerrie Marshall led Moorpark in a nonconference rout at home.

Huffaker scored a game-high 21 points and Marshall had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Moorpark (5-1).

Amy Chandler scored 12 points and had 10 assists and teammate Angie Long had 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Moorpark. Cypress is 1-4.

Canyons 68, Hancock 58--Kim Posey came within one point of her single-game career high, scoring 20 points and pulling down 12 rebounds to lead the host Cougars in the nonconference victory.

Canyons (3-1) was aided by Keira Irwin’s 15 points and eight assists and Shannon Solway’s 10 points. Canyons’ starting center, Jennifer Haig, was limited to about 10 minutes because of foul trouble.

The Cougars took a 38-25 lead in the first half before Hancock (3-1) scored 11 unanswered points. Canyons extended a nine-point halftime lead to 17 but again allowed a Hancock run that cut the lead to four points with four minutes remaining.

MEN

Cal Baptist 91, Cal Lutheran 80--The Kingsmen could not contain Cal Baptist’s Greg Fisher and lost the nonconference game in Thousand Oaks.

Fisher scored a game-high 27 points, finishing the first half with 17 on eight-of-10 shooting from the field.

Chris Johnson led the Kingsmen (1-2) with 22 points and Jeff deLaveaga added 21 points and three assists.

Joe Cohen had 13 points while Tom Sglav and Carl Champion each added 10 for Cal Lutheran.

Cal Baptist (3-1) held a 39-38 lead at the half. But the Kingsmen opened the final period with two DeLaveaga three-point baskets and went ahead, 65-62, midway through the second half. Cal Baptist then scored 15 unanswered points, and the Kingsmen never recovered.

Ventura 92, Harbor 75--Lester Neal led Ventura to a first-round victory in the Ventura tournament with 24 points and 14 rebounds.

Ventura (4-1) will play Malcolm X of Chicago in the second round at 8 tonight.

DiJon Bernard and Uba Satterfield each added 19 points for Ventura, and Jerry Dalton scored 11. Harbor dropped to 5-2.

Oxnard 65, L.A. City 57--Oxnard scored 44 second-half points to rebound from a seven-point halftime deficit in the first round of the Ventura tournament.

Oxnard’s Don Mitchell scored a game-high 26 points. Freshmen Shawn Talley and Tim Thomas each added 11 points.

Oxnard (5-1) will play El Camino in the second round at 6 tonight.

L. A. City is 4-1.
