From Times Staff and Wire Reports

About 100 town residents evacuated when a chemical leaked from a truck were allowed to return home after authorities determined that the substance posed little risk, police said. The chemical was identified as hydrogen peroxide, said police dispatcher Donna Ingle. Fumes from the bleaching agent can cause irritation but are not considered dangerous, officials said. No one was injured. A 60-mile stretch of U. S. 97 from Midland, Ore., to Weed, Calif., was reopened.
