ANAHEIM : City Drops Proposal for Ban on Parking

Share

Owners of property and businesses along State College Boulevard will not be inundated with parking problems from a city proposal that would have eliminated street parking to accommodate an additional lane of traffic.

About 100 people from the area brought their concerns to the City Council earlier this week, persuading council members to vote unanimously against the proposal and retain their street parking.

“There may come a day when this road has to be restricted for parking, but that day is not today,” said Councilman Tom Daly.

The project had been part of the city’s Vision 2000 Transportation Plan that called for the removal of parking on larger city streets to make way for more travel lanes. State College Boulevard had been a priority in the plan, and the city allocated funds for it in last year’s budget.

Besides the loss of parking places, area residents were concerned that State College would be changed into a highway and increase the risk for children playing in front yards. Business people were worried that customers would have difficulty parking and would go elsewhere to shop.

Council members said they will reconsider the restricted parking idea when the city synchronizes traffic signals, which is planned for sometime next year.
