Share

A top official with Orange County’s Roman Catholic schools was robbed at knifepoint in his Anaheim home Monday, authorities said.

William Carriere, 48, told police that the robber threatened him with a butcher knife, tied him up and ransacked his home, making off with his new car and $1,400 in valuables, Police Sgt. Ken Brott said.

The 1991 brown Honda Accord is registered to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. A diocese directory lists Carriere as an associate superintendent of Catholic schools.

Carriere told investigators that he met the robber Sunday night on Cypress Avenue, near Anaheim’s Pearson Park. The man who called himself “Joe” was “tired, hungry and despondent,” so Carriere offered him a place to stay for the night, he told police.

About 10:15 a.m. Monday, Carriere was preparing to give his house guest a ride to Newport Beach when the man threatened him with the butcher knife and tied him up, Brott said. Carriere told police that the robber fled in the car with video and audio equipment plus jewelry and wristwatches.

Brott said police are searching for the robber.
