COLLEGE BASEBALL NCAA REGIONALS : Oklahoma State Strolls Past Long Beach
Oklahoma State took advantage of seven walks to score eight runs in the third inning and beat Cal State Long Beach, 12-8, Monday in the championship round of the Central Regional at Austin, Tex.
The teams played again Monday night for the championship and a berth in the College World Series.
Ritchie Moody had a three-run double, one of only two hits in the Cowboys’ big inning. Oklahoma State (47-19) added four runs in the sixth to make it 12-4 en route to its 16th victory in 17 games.
Joe Wallace doubled during both Oklahoma State rallies and drove in five runs as the Cowboys avenged a 7-5 defeat to Long Beach that broke a 13-game winning streak.
The 49ers (43-20) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Cowboy shortstop Lou Lucca mishandled a grounder by Rudy Rodriguez, allowing Michael Case to score from second base.
The 49ers scored four runs in the eighth on consecutive doubles by Jason Giambi, Scott Talanoa and John Mancha to cut the lead to 12-8. Long Beach had the bases loaded when Paul Meador relieved for Oklahoma State and got Giambi to hit a fly ball.
