SPRINT Nets $150,000 With Gala

SPRINT(Special Preventive Research, Intervention and New Technology for Children at UCLA) netted more than $150,000 at the benefit opening night of “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber” at Universal Amphitheatre on June 20. An English supper party followed. Funds will go to research programs to prevent disabling birth conditions and development of new treatments for children before birth and in the early years of life.

* Motion Picture and Television Fund’s 13th annual Heartbeat of Hollywood Golf Classic June 10 at the Calabasas Golf and Country Club raised $75,000 for a new truck, medical equipment and automatic sliding doors for the Motion Picture Country House. To date, the golf classic has raised more than $575,000 for the fund. Robert Stack was honorary chairman.

* Torrance Memorial Medical Center received a $15,000 check at a dinner-dance hosted by the Luminaries May 31 at the Palos Verdes Country Club. The check represents proceeds from the fall gala funded and produced by Nordstrom in the South Bay Galleria. Judy Sipes is Luminaries president.

* Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation’s 1991 Albert Schweitzer Leadership Awards gala was held May 20 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City and marked the 33rd anniversary of the HOBY Foundation. The gala raised $725,000 for student leadership development programs in all 50 states.

Love Is Feeding Everyone will reap more than $120,000 netted at the second annual Jerry Buss Celebrity Golf Invitational held June 3 at the Riviera Country Club. The event was sponsored by the Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, Pinseeker Golf Corp, Toyota and Vlasic.

* Los Angeles Regional Foodbank received a $22,000 grant from the New Jersey-based Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation Inc. The contribution will help support 23 participating food agencies

* United Jewish Fund’s San Fernando Valley Region Women’s Division raised $216,000 at its Valley-wide “bruncheon” and fashion show. The event was held at the Universal Sheraton. Proceeds will be allocated to more than 20 non-sectarian, humanitarian programs.

* Boy Scouts of America L. A. Area Council netted $25,000 May 13 at its Crystal Awards gala at the Four Seasons Hotel. Gov. Pete Wilson was honorary chairman.

* Society for the Preservation of Film Music held its seventh annual Career Achievement Awards at he Sheraton Universal. The black-tie gala netted $30,000 for the society’s work to restore and preserve film music.

* Casa Colina Foundation’s annual Tribute to Courage benefit dinner, held at Pasadena’s Ritz Carlton May 28, was attended by more than 400 guests. The gala netted about $65,000 for specialized rehabilitation services for children and adults disabled by injuries or illness.

* American Heart Assn. netted $20,000 at its May 18 Heart and Sole Classic run sponsored by the Puente Hills Branch of AHA and Health Valley Foods. Event chairman Charles House led a group of 20 volunteer committee members who ran the event held in the City of Industry. Health Valley Foods donated $7,500.

* Golden State Minority Foundation’s 17th annual Salute to Education raised $165,000 June 12 at The Museum of Flying in Santa Monica. The foundation, founded by Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company, provides financial assistance to minority students pursuing degrees in life insurance and business administration. It also administers specialized grants sponsored by corporations and individuals and educational programs in San Francisco/Oakland, Detroit and Los Angeles.

* California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles campus, has received a $44,000 grant from the Pacific Telesis Foundation to support its Gang Counseling Consortium. The funds will be used to place graduate students in agencies that provide counseling to young people involved or at risk of becoming involved in gangs. Stipends for students will be provided by the Weingart Foundation.

* Westside Food Bank’s “Spring Thanks Giving Dinner” held May 26 at the Beverly Hills Country Club netted more than $18,000. The event was underwritten by Daniel J. Travanti and an anonymous donor. Proceeds will be used to aid the elderly, the disabled and low-income families.

* Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has received a $100,000 donation from Jean Schaffner in honor of her late husband, Franklin Schaffner. The gift is for the academy’s endowment campaign for the newly opened Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills. Money received through the endowment campaign is used to fund future operations of the center.
