SPORTSCOPE : Westchester Boys Advance in L.A. Games Basketball

The top-seeded Westchester High boys’ basketball team advanced to the round of 16 in the L.A. Watts Summer Games by routing Yucaipa, 75-36, and Anaheim Western, 61-23, last weekend.

The Comets, who had a bye in the first round, will meet No. 17 Verbum Dei at 9 a.m. Saturday at the El Camino College South Gymnasium. Other Saturday boys’ games at the South gym: No. 8 Carson-No. 24 St. Monica, 10 a.m.; No. 12 Loyola-Santa Monica, 11 a.m., and No. 20 San Bernardino Cajon-No. 4 Riverside North, noon.

Saturday boys’ games at Los Angeles Jordan High: No. 2 Fremont-Granada Hills Kennedy, 9 a.m.; No. 10 Pasadena Muir-No. 7 Fairfax, 10 a.m.; No. 6 Crenshaw-No. 11 Compton Dominguez, 11 a.m., and No. 19 Dorsey-Taft, noon.

The final day of boys’ and girls’ basketball will be Sunday at the El Camino North gym. No Westside girls’ team advanced past last week’s opening rounds.

In the football semifinals at El Camino on Sunday, Beverly Hills will meet Canyon of Canyon Country at 9 a.m., and Carson will meet North Torrance at 10:15 a.m. The final is at 1 p.m. Sunday at El Camino.

In Saturday’s quarterfinals in baseball, Westchester will play Chatsworth at noon at Redondo Union. The final is at noon Sunday at El Camino.

In the water polo round of 16, Santa Monica will play Long Beach Poly at 12:20 p.m. Saturday at El Camino. The championship match is at 2 p.m. Sunday at El Camino.

Pepperdine sophomore relief pitcher Steve Montgomery was selected to the All-American first team chosen by the American Baseball Coaches Assn. Wave sophomore second baseman Steve Rodriguez was named to the second team.

The right-handed Montgomery was 9-1 with four saves and a 1.49 earned-run average. In 78 2/3 innings, he gave up 55 hits, had 81 strikeouts and issued 20 walks.

Brentwood School senior Brian Garrett was named to the All-Southern Section 4-A second team in boys’ volleyball.
