Mayor Bradley told Associated Press correspondent James Escarcega that the Festival’s low attendance was the fault of The Times.

“I think that if they would have promoted it more than just at the opening ceremonies, the attendance would have been better,” he said. “It is a shame that The Times didn’t give us the coverage that this event deserved.”

Jim Goyjer, a public relations representative for the organizing committee, agreed.

“Their coverage before the Festival set the tone that this wasn’t a major event,” he said. “They should have taken it more seriously than they did.”
