Don Sneddon, the Rancho Santiago College baseball coach, has been named the college’s interim athletic director, the college announced Thursday.

Sneddon will handle the job during the 1991-92 school year. He takes over for Roger Wilson, who retired in June.

It was announced in June that Nancy Warren would take over as physical education dean and athletic director, but she decided to concentrate on the academic side of the job.

The athletic director’s job will be filled on an interim basis for a year before making a full-time hire.

Sneddon said he is happy to try it for a year.

“I’m going to see what happens,” he said. “It is a good situation for me to see if I can coach and do this job as well. Now, I don’t only have my problems, but I have everybody else’s too. I think I’m going to learn quickly to appreciate more all the work people like Roger Wilson did.”

Sneddon started as the pitching coach at Rancho Santiago in 1976 and became the head coach in 1982.

Don Frank, a former Rancho Santiago men’s basketball assistant coach, has been named head coach at Rio Hondo College in Whittier.

Frank was an assistant to Dana Pagett for eight seasons, including the 1989-90 season when the Dons won the first of two consecutive state titles. Frank then stepped down to spend more time with his family.

Frank, who coached at Orange and Redlands high schools before Rancho Santiago, will have a difficult task in Whittier. Rio Hondo was 4-23 last season. Rio Hondo and Rancho Santiago aren’t scheduled to meet next season.
