Amtrak to Operate New Commuter Service
The National Railroad Passenger Corp. (Amtrak) was selected Thursday to operate Southern California’s Metrolink commuter-train service, which is scheduled to debut next October.
Amtrak, which already operates local commuter-train services in Maryland, Massachusetts and Connecticut, was chosen over Canada’s UTDC by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, meeting in Los Angeles.
Initially, Metrolink will connect Moorpark in Ventura County, the Santa Clarita Valley and San Bernardino with Los Angeles Union Station. Eventually the service will be expanded to link both Los Angeles and Riverside with Orange County.
Amtrak already operates one commuter train each way each day for the Orange County Transit Authority and runs the intercity San Diegan train that also is used heavily by commuters.
