Defensive lineman Mark Caesar of the University of Miami was arrested after the team’s 17-16 victory at Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., last Saturday.
Campus police arrested Caesar after 40 to 50 students in the crowd said they wanted to swear out a complaint against him for throwing a cup of ice into the crowd. Caesar apologized for the incident, saying he had been provoked by the rowdy crowd.
Caesar was served a notice to appear in court on one count of simple battery, a first-degree misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Miami Coach Dennis Erickson and Athletic Director Dave Maggard, who both said they were hit by objects thrown from the crowd during the game, said no disciplinary action is planned.
