Bonilla’s Meeting With Herzog Rescheduled for This Morning
Bobby Bonilla’s scheduled meeting Thursday with Angel Senior Vice President Whitey Herzog was postponed because Bonilla’s agent, Dennis Gilbert, was involved in an unexpectedly long trial in Montgomery, Ala.
Gilbert represented Oakland A’s outfielder Jose Canseco in a fraud lawsuit filed by the promoters of a baseball card show. Gilbert and his firm, the Beverly Hills Sports Council, were ordered to pay promoter Jim Pitts of Montgomery $207,000 in damages. Bonilla was with Gilbert to observe the trial, and the pair didn’t leave for California until late Thursday.
The meeting was rescheduled for 9 a.m. today at Anaheim Stadium.
Herzog had a lengthy meeting Thursday with Angel owners Gene and Jackie Autry to determine the club’s course in the free agent market. The Angels will be the third team to meet with Bonilla, who is expected to crash the $5-million average annual salary level. He talked to the Phillies and Mets last weekend.
