At present, the only place in the nation offering the operation is the All-Care Animal Referral Center in Fountain Valley, which flies in a team of veterinary surgeons from Palo Alto and Boston. Cost: $3,000 to $5,000, plus you must adopt the donor cat. . . . Dr. Robert L. Rooks, owner of the center, says research may enable transplants of other organs “in two or three years.” But transplants are not yet feasible for dogs, whose “aggressive” immune systems are more likely to reject any transplanted organs.
