SANTA PAULA : City Council Gives OK to Housing Plan
The Santa Paula City Council gave tentative approval Tuesday to a housing plan that incorporates the results of the city’s first community survey on housing needs.
The plan, which the city last updated in 1985, will be submitted to the state Department of Housing and Community Development for review.
The housing plan estimates that the city will need 620 additional housing units over the next five years.
Council members had delayed sending the plan to state officials until they tabulated results of a community survey begun in the spring. The survey was answered by 810 residents, according to a Planning Department report.
Most of the respondents cited a need for more senior housing in the city, Planning Director Joan Kus said. However, that need should be satisfied by about 150 senior housing units that are under construction, Kus said.
Of the 620 new residential units called for in the housing plan, 221 would be for very low- and low-income residents. The remaining units would be priced for moderate- and high-income families, according to the Planning Department report.
Affordable housing is not a critical concern in Santa Paula, Kus said. The city already has a large stock of small, older homes that are relatively affordable, she said.
