IRVINE : Council of Churches President to Appear

The Right Rev. Vinton Anderson, first black American president of the World Council of Churches, will make his first appearance in Orange County tonight at the Irvine Marriott Hotel.

Anderson, 53, who was elected to the prestigious position in the international ecumenical organization last year, oversees more than two 250 African Methodist Episcopal congregations west of the Mississippi River. He is the second American to hold the post.

As president, Anderson serves as one of eight ambassadors around the world, representing the organization on various issues.

Anderson, who is from St. Louis, will speak at the Irvine AME Zion Church’s first anniversary celebration after an 8 p.m. dinner at the Irvine Marriott, 18000 Von Karman Ave.
