COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Home Runs Power CLU to 10th Win in a Row

Solo home runs by Jason Wilcox, Eric Johnson and Darrell McMillin paced Cal Lutheran to a 9-2 win over Claremont-Mudd in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. baseball game Friday at Cal Lutheran.

The win kept the Kingsmen unbeaten at 10-0, 4-0 in SCIAC play.

McMillin’s blast in the eighth inning was his eighth of the season and capped a three-run inning. Wilcox’s home run in the second inning gave Cal Lutheran a 2-1 lead. Johnson’s home run came in the seventh.

Wilcox was four for four and is eight for nine the past two games.

Point Loma Nazarene 5, The Master’s 1--Miguel Abascal’s two-run home run in the seventh inning broke open the NAIA District III game at Point Loma Nazarene.

Dion Dice (1-1) scattered three hits in seven innings to earn the win. Rich Miller and Dave Swearingen each had two hits for Point Loma Nazarene.

SOFTBALL

Nevada Las Vegas tournament--Cal State Northridge split two games in pool play in the Nevada Las Vegas tournament, but the Matadors won their pool on run differential.

Northridge (12-10) lost its opening game at Cheyenne Park to Utah State, 2-0, in nine innings, then defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 6-1, in the second game.

But Matadors won the three-team pool because Pomona shut out Utah State, 1-0, earlier in the day.

Kathy Blake (7-1) struck out eight and did not walk a batter to pick up the win for Northridge in the second game.

Patti Pearson was two for three, scored a run and drove in another for the Matadors. Teammates Jen Fleming and Denise Swank each had two hits.

Cami Allen (3-3) took the loss for Northridge against Utah State.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 63, Pierce 33--Freshman Robert Brown won the 100 freestyle (50.8), the 200 freestyle (1:57.1) and anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay team as Valley (1-1) won a Western State Conference meet at home.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 94, Pierce 20--Diane Hanna won three events and Luzmilla Ocon won two as the Monarchs (1-1) cruised to a WSC win over visiting Pierce (0-2).

MEN’S TRACK

Moorpark 101 1/2, Glendale 46, Canyons 40 1/2, West L.A. 3--Derrick Gaines won both sprints to lead host Moorpark to a runaway victory in a Western State Conference four-way meet.

Gaines won the 100 meters in 10.8 seconds and the 200 in 22.4. Moorpark’s Brian Krill (47.7 in the 400), Joe Maashoff (54.6 in the intermediate hurdles) and Dan Zorich (151 feet 6 inches in the hammer throw) also had impressive marks.
