Woman Planning to Move Is Killed by Stray Bullet

A woman who was in the process of moving because her gang-infested neighborhood had become too violent was shot and killed after a stray bullet came through her window, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials reported Saturday.

Investigators said they believe that June Guin, 60, was hit Friday night by gunfire from a gang-related shooting nearly a block from her home in the 300 block of Eldon Avenue.

Deputy Sam Conrad said a stray bullet came through a window in Guin’s living room, where she had been watching television, and struck her in the head.

At about that time, Jesus Calletano, 17, of La Puente was shot in an attack as he sat in a car on a nearby street, Conrad said, adding that the shooting appeared to be gang-related.

Guin was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital, where she died several hours later. Friends drove Calletano to the same hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Guin and her husband were packed and in the process of moving from the neighborhood because it had become too violent, Conrad said.

When the shooting occurred, she was watching television in her living room at about 11 p.m., Conrad said.

“She got up and walked to the back of the house and was struck in the head by a bullet,” he said. “She was shot at the same time, between rounds, as the 17-year-old was shot. She was in the same line of fire.”

There are no suspects, Conrad said.
