Former El Dorado Player Drafted by Yankees
Former El Dorado High School standout Matt Luke was drafted in the eighth round by the New York Yankees, his brother, Josh, said Friday.
Luke, a junior first baseman at California, batted .377 with 10 home runs this season.
He is the fourth El Dorado graduate chosen during this week’s free-agent draft. Cal State Fullerton third baseman Phil Nevin, drafted by Houston, was the No. 1 selection overall. Nevin and Luke were teammates on El Dorado’s 5-A title team in 1989.
In other draft news:
--Steven Ashton, an outfielder from Sunny Hills High School, was drafted in the 35th round of the free-agent draft, his father, Richard Ashton, said.
--Esperanza pitcher Randy Wilson was drafted by the Seattle, Mariner scout Myron Pines said.
