A suspected drunk driver was seriously injured Sunday after he lost control of his car while driving south on the Ventura Freeway in Ventura, crossing the highway median and striking a bus that carried 47 passengers, authorities said.

Miguel G. Vasquez, 40, of Oxnard was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and released into the custody of the Ventura County Medical Center, where he was in serious condition, according to the California Highway Patrol and a hospital nursing supervisor.

CHP officers said the accident occurred just south of the Main Street exit at 10:52 a.m., when Vasquez’s car spun out of control and veered across the median and three lanes of northbound traffic before hitting the bus.

The impact of the crash caused the bus driver to run into a Chevrolet motor home that was in the middle northbound lane.

Neither the driver of the motor home, a 50-year-old Templeton man, nor the bus driver, a 60-year-old man from Arleta, was injured.

The bus passengers were also uninjured, CHP officials said.
