PRO FOOTBALL : DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Knox Won’t Stop Looking

The Rams continued their waiver-wire wheeling and dealing, signing former Cincinnati Bengal linebacker Leon White and putting linebacker Paul Butcher (strained arch) on the injured-reserve list.

White, a six-year veteran, becomes the Rams’ seventh free-agent pickup since they set their original 47-man active roster a month ago. And Coach Chuck Knox, who Tuesday released one of the recent signees, running back Troy Stradford, after only three weeks, certainly didn’t deny that the Rams will continue to be pursuing anybody they find attractive and be releasing anybody they do not.

“I don’t really like to do that,” Knox said. “I don’t think anybody does. You’d like to have a group in place and say, ‘Hey, this is what we’re going with.’

“But we’re in a situation here where either by injury or whatever, when someone is out there that we think might be better, we’ve got to bring that player in, take a look at him.”

Cornerback Todd Lyght, put on injured reserve to recover from a dislocated right shoulder, said it is frustrating to be sidelined just when he thought he was coming into his own.

“I’m disappointed, but this is adversity I have to face,” said Lyght, who has been instructed to wear a sling on his right arm for two weeks.

“This is my second season. I was getting a lot more confidence, I was playing a lot better football. I’m going to have some missed opportunities in these four games, but I’ll come back and finish the season strong, there’s no doubt about that.”

Browning Nagle, starting quarterback for the New York Jets, whom the Rams face Sunday at Anaheim Stadium, practiced without pain in his tender right hand and said he thinks he will be ready for Sunday’s game. Nagle, who threw for 366 yards in the season opener, missed last week’s game after banging his hand on a defender’s helmet.
