Roger Takahashi, highly successful varsity football coach at La Quinta High for six seasons, said he’s enjoying his new role as an assistant under Steve Bolton at Los Amigos High.

“I don’t know if I like being an assistant better than being a head coach, but this is a great situation,” Takahashi said. “Steve is a fantastic guy to work for. He’s given me complete control of the offense.”

Takahashi’s teams were 39-27 at La Quinta and advanced to the Southern Section Division VI championship game in 1989.

Jeff Andrade, Mater Dei assistant basketball coach, and Mike Moore, an assistant at Christ College Irvine, showed last weekend in the Hoop It Up tournament at Huntington Beach that they can play the game as well as coach it.

They teamed with center Kevin Tye and forward Rick Sharp to lead Beach Brothers to the open division championship of the three-on-three tournament.

Beach Brothers defeated L.A. Annex, 16-10, in the championship game. The Beach Brothers lost their first game in the double-elimination tournament and then won nine consecutive games to advance to the national championship, Oct. 16 in Austin, Tex.
