Sorry, Dad: Brad Thornton, Capistrano Valley High School freshman, had never played football before this season.

But while riding in the car with his father one day, he saw the freshman team practice. Thornton told his dad, “That looks fun. I can do that.”

Thornton, who is 6-3, 170 pounds, is now the freshman team’s starting quarterback.

His dad, Cougar basketball Coach Mark Thornton, will have to wait a couple months before seeing his son in the gym.

“The main thing is he’s having fun,” Mark Thornton said. “Besides, we share our athletes at this school.”

Footnote: The Cougar freshman football team is 0-2, so basketball season is just around the corner.

Some days it just doesn’t pay to take a snap from center.

Dana Hills quarterback Scott Covington labored through Friday night’s 15-6 loss to Trabuco Hills. Three of his passes were intercepted, one of which was returned 98 yards for a touchdown. He also was sacked three times.

Finally, Covington lofted a perfect pass to John Pak, who was wide open inside the five-yard line. Pak dropped it.
