A Good Stretch : The designing genes of the Seymour family show in their jeans. These garments even make you feel thin.

Seymour Fashions makes the stretch denim jeans of my dreams for $35.

These jeans have elastic tops, are full-fashioned, and fit the mature figure beautifully. They even make you feel thin. They are not supposed to shrink or knee-out, and I won’t be satisfied until I own a pair in every color. They come in blue, acid-wash, black, white, red, purple and pink--and owner Lauren Seymour is looking for a khaki-colored fabric suitable for stretch jeans.

Randy and Lauren Seymour have been at this Reseda location for more than four of the 17 years they have been creating and manufacturing women’s apparel. Several cruise ships carry their product, as do boutiques across the country.

The key word is experimentation. They will customize anything--sweats, sweaters, T’s--in almost any size. Lauren creates five to 10 designs every day, so there is tremendous variety in the inventory. The real value is in the semi-custom service. You can sit down with Lauren Seymour and draw from her designs and fabrics.

Most of the clothes at Seymour Fashions are cotton or a cotton blend. If you want a vest, jacket or shirt in a matching color (each item is $25 to $55, depending on the amount of adornment) check the racks. If there isn’t one that suits your taste, they’ll make one for you for about the same price. The T-shirts, which range from $20 to $40, don’t seem to be as good a deal. Check the sale racks for lower-priced ones.

I was delighted to see a broad selection of dickeys in solids and prints for $10 and $12. Unless you’re over 40, you may not know that a dickey is a false shirt front worn under a jacket or a shift to provide the look of a collar or turtleneck without the bulk of a full T-shirt or sweater.

The helpful personnel seem like family. If a jacket or a pair of jeans is too long, they’ll shorten it in a matter of minutes. Be sure to get on the mailing list for their sales, and check out the sale section.
