HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL : Mission Bay Outlasts Valhalla in 2 1/2-Hour Match

Ninth-seeded Mission Bay’s girls’ volleyball team took a marathon 2 1/2-hour victory over host and eighth-seeded Valhalla in the first round of the San Diego Section Division I playoffs Thursday night.

In a roller-coaster match, Mission Bay prevailed, 9-15, 15-9, 13-15, 15-6, 15-12, to set up a meeting Saturday against top-seeded Torrey Pines (21-6), which needed 44 minutes, one of its shortest matches of the season, to oust El Cajon Valley, 15-0, 15-1, 15-4.

It was the second consecutive year Mission Bay, who finished fourth in the City Western League, has turned back Valhalla, which was the Grossmont 2-A League winner. Last year the Bucs defeated Valhalla at home. Kristen Grebing had 21 kills and teammate Adia Barnes added 14 for Mission Bay.

Torrey Pines was led by five kills each from senior outside hitters Michelle Pistone and Crystal Vazzana. Falcon junior outside hitter Autumn Paul served five aces in the first game.

In another Division I match, fifth-seeded San Pasqual (15-7) needed four games to turn back Point Loma (15-6). The Golden Eagles defeated the Pointers, 16-14, 15-9, 11-15, 16-14 behind Allysia Hanson’s 15 kills and Christina Stark’s 10 kills.

In Division V, Lindsay Goergen had eight kills and Kelley Friedgen added 15 assists as La Jolla Country Day defeated Lutheran, 15-0, 15-0, 15-7. Francis Parker (11-10) was stretched to four games with a 15-5, 15-12, 12-15, 15-11 victory over Marian. Orian Moss, Tory Rodger and Angela Sherman had 11 kills each for Parker.
