Loyola to Open Season With Intrasquad Game

Loyola Marymount will unveil its 1992-93 men’s basketball team during the annual Crimson-Gray intrasquad game at 5 p.m. Sunday in Gersten Pavilion.

The game will mark the debut of UCLA transfer Zan Mason and guards Bill Mazurie and Tom Airey.

Mason, a junior forward who played two seasons at UCLA before redshirting last season, was a prep All-America at Westchester High.

Mazurie, a junior point guard, averaged 17.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists to lead Cerritos College to a 33-4 record and the state community college title last season.

Airey, a freshman guard from Capistrano Valley High, ranks second in state high school history in career three-point baskets with 253 and averaged 15.3 points last season.

After the intrasquad game, the Lions play exhibition games against the Lafayette Hustlers Nov. 20 and Melbourne (Australia) Nov. 28. They open the season Dec. 1 against visiting College of Notre Dame, an NCAA Division II team from Northern California.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team will return to California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it travels to UC Riverside.

Dominguez Hills (7-25, 1-8 in the CCAA) lost to Riverside in three games earlier this season.

The Toros have been led by senior outside hitter Heather Perini and junior middle blocker Evonne Caouette. Perini set a school single-match record with 32 kills in a five-game victory against UC San Diego last week and leads the squad with 358 kills.

The Loyola Marymount water polo team concludes regular-season play with a match against UC Riverside at noon Sunday in Riverside.

The Lions, who are attempting to earn a berth in the Nov. 22-24 Western Water Polo Championships in Pomona, are 7-15. They

have not played a match since Oct. 25.

Loyola has been led by senior Jeff Lee with 44 goals and junior Charlie Wallace with 28.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation and California Interscholastic Federation will conduct a free soccer coaching clinic Saturday and Nov. 25 at South Torrance High, 4801 Pacific Coast Highway, Torrance.

Instructors will include Carin Jennings, a member of the U.S. women’s national team and a former Palos Verdes High player, and Tim Harris, a former South Torrance High player and U.S. national team member.

The program, geared toward high school and club coaches, meets training requirements for a United States Soccer Federation “D” coaches license.

The Los Angeles Salsa Professional Soccer Club of the American Professional Soccer League will have open tryouts Saturday and Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.

Sessions will start at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the school’s soccer field. The team will begin play in 1993 and play at Cal State Fullerton.

The coach is Rildo Menezes, a former member of the Brazilian World Cup team and the New York Cosmos.

Registration is under way for the Peninsula Christmas Basketball Camp, for boys in first through eighth grade, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 28-30 at Chadwick High in Palos Verdes.

The camp will stress fundamentals and activities will include games and swimming.
