ROUNDUP : L.A. Baptist Reaches Final in Volleyball

L.A. Baptist advanced to the Southern Section Division V girls’ volleyball championship game Thursday night with a 15-12, 15-12, 9-15, 15-10 victory over Calvary Chapel at Estancia High in Costa Mesa.

Sarah Rameson led the Knights with 26 kills and 16 digs. Erika Koss had 14 kills and three blocks. Setter Jill deRuyter had 49 assists.

L.A. Baptist (18-0) will meet Capistrano Valley Christian on Saturday night at Cerritos Valley College for the championship, which would be the Knights’ second in two years.

In another Southern Section volleyball semifinal:

Nordhoff d. La Canada, 9-15, 15-7, 15-8, 15-5--The Rangers rallied from a first-game loss to win the next three at Ventura High and advance to the Division IV championship game.

Nordhoff (20-3), seeded No. 1, will meet Atascadero in the championship game Saturday at 11:30 at Cerritos College.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 102, Canyons 89--Center Darnell Cherry, forward Jason Grimes and point guard Dan Prince each scored 18 points for the host Marauders (2-0). Mario Garcia added 15 points and eight rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 64, Moorpark 55--Antelope Valley led from start to finish and led by as much as 18 in the opening-round game of the Long Beach tournament.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Birmingham 78, Reseda 52--Brave forward Greg Whiteside scored 37 points to lead Birmingham (1-0) in a nonconference game at Reseda (0-1).
