Stan Quina, who has led the Simi Valley High football team to consecutive playoff appearances for the first time in school history, says he is dissatisfied at the school and might resign.

Quina, 37, said Friday that school administrators recently denied his request for a full-time teaching position. He has served as a walk-on coach and substitute teacher at Simi Valley since 1990.

He has completed course work toward earning a teaching credential and needs only to fulfill a one-semester term as a student-teacher to become fully certified, he said.

“I’d prefer to stay here, but they just aren’t in the position to offer anything right now,” he said. “I don’t have a firm job offer. At this time, I need to look elsewhere.”

Simi Valley is 14-9 under Quina the past two years after going 0-10 in his first season. This season, the Pioneers (7-5) finished third in the Marmonte League and reached the Southern Section Division III quarterfinals.

George Ragsdale, athletic director at Simi Valley, said the school is pleased with Quina but does not have any teaching positions available.

“As far as I’m concerned and as far as the administration is concerned, Stan Quina, hopefully, will forever be our football coach,” Ragsdale said.
