A 20-year-old man was shot and seriously wounded Tuesday while standing near a Van Nuys private school where students were being dismissed from classes, Los Angeles police said. No students were injured.

Detective Steven Fisk said Dale Jung of North Hollywood was shot about 2:40 p.m. outside Montclair School at the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Lanark Street. Jung was standing on the sidewalk talking to two men in a car when suddenly the passenger in the car fired as many as seven shots at him, Fisk said.

Jung was hit at least four times, according to police, and was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition after surgery.

Fisk said investigators regard the shooting as gang-related. Two young men were being questioned by police Tuesday evening, but police declined to say if they were suspects.

Students said the shooting did not cause a major commotion because it happened quickly after school let out for the day and not many students had gotten to the parking lot exit closest to where the shooting took place.

Police quickly cordoned off Lanark Street to investigate.

Several parents, arriving to pick up their children, rushed to the yellow police tape and were met by a school security guard who assured them the victim was not a student. Neither the security guard nor school officials would talk to reporters.

About 450 students attend the school, which is surrounded by a block wall and steel fence.

Police said that after the shooting, the car with the shooter sped west on Lanark. A 9-millimeter pistol and ammunition magazine were thrown from the window and were recovered by police. A witness gave police a license plate number for the car, but the auto was not found.

As a large group of bystanders watched the police investigation at the scene, detectives took two of the observers aside and began to question them. They were taken to the Van Nuys police station for further questioning.
